June 15th – 8 Seconds to Froth Win
It is official – we are awarding winning homebrewers! We entered two of our home brewed beers into the 8 Seconds to Froth Competition that was held at the end of May 2016, and I am so excited to share the results of our homebrew win with you! Many of you know that craft beer has been a passion of mine for quite some time, and now that I am a serious homebrewer, I am looking forward to taking my skills to the next level. This was an opportunity to receive feedback that we can really use to shape the direction of our beer going forward.
Of the two beer styles we entered, one was our Spiced Imperial Russian Stout, affectionally named A Family Affair, which earned us a not-so-insignificant 4th place. This beer included a special mix of spices and adjuncts that created very interesting flavor, aroma, and mouth-feel. It was a special recipe that was created by me and my mother-in-law to celebrate our family, with each ingredient representing different people and characteristics present in our very eclectic and unique group.
The other beer entered was our Lagered Porter, affectionately named the Loggerhead Porter. The Loggerhead Porter took second place in the 2015 BJCP Style 34C, Experimental Beer. We used a traditional Brown Porter Recipe and utilized lager yeast and techniques to create a very smooth dark beer that can be enjoyed in the heat of summer. It seems to be a favorite of our friends and family, and we were thrilled that it earned a medal at this event!
I’m thankful for everything that I have learned from the Applied Craft Brewing Certificate Program at Regis University, and happy that my wife is so supportive when it comes to experimenting with beer recipes. This was certainly a great day to earn this award!
